The second Lung Cancer Advocacy Summit was held on April 23-26 in Dallas, TX. The Summit provided training and guidance to 53 grass-roots lung cancer advocates. They were joined by 15 alumni from the 2008 Summit who shared their advocacy experiences as group discussion leaders and workshop presenters.
The topics discussed at the Summit were:
• understanding the science of lung cancer,
• becoming a lung cancer consumer reviewer,
• engaging the media,
• crafting your message,
• influencing the legislative process,
• and raising lung cancer awareness in your community.
The meeting included several interactive breakout sessions, where participants addressed the stigma associated with lung cancer, created and practiced their 30-second elevator speeches, and brainstormed priorities to move the lung cancer community forward.
One of the highlights of the weekend was a tour of laboratory facilities at the University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center. The Summit participants learned about several cutting-edge advances in lung cancer research first-hand from researchers.
The advocates left the Summit empowered and excited to take action in their communities to raise awareness of and funds for lung cancer!
